$64,152 - $77,976 Annually (DOE/DOQ)

ABOUT LUCAS VALLEY CHILDREN'S CENTER

Lucas Valley Children's Center offers year-round child care to children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.  The center provides a safe, enriching, and enjoyable atmosphere where school-age children can learn and grow through positive experiences.  

ABOUT PARKSIDE CHILDREN'S CENTER

Parkside Children's Center offers year-round child care.  Located in the heart of San Rafael, Parkside Children's Center is a place where school aged children are encouraged through play, connection, and creativity.  

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The is comprised of two divisions, Library and Recreation & Childcare, that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of San Rafael residents. The Department’s mission is to enrich the community through discovery, learning, and play, and strives to maximize the delivery of strategically aligned programs and services to provide the highest value for the community.

The Child Care division offers programs with developmentally appropriate curriculum with a wide variety of activities and experiences that support and enhance children's cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth.  Our professional staff provides a balance of child-initiated and teacher-led activities designed to support children's individual growth and development in a safe and enriching environment.  

THE POSITION

The Child Care Supervisor plans, organizes and oversees the operation, maintenance, safety, activities and staff of a pre-school or school age child care program, including direct program delivery, training and evaluation of assigned staff, conducting program registration; developing program promotional materials; communicating with school personnel, center families and community members; keeping and maintaining records and producing reports; and meeting all requirements of grant funding.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Including but not limited to)

  • Instructs and supervises children; facilitates and leads classroom activities.
  • Assists with the establishment of the program budget; tracks expenditures and administers budget.  
  • Conducts registrations and provides information to parents regarding program requirements.
  • Develops and implements participant behavior and discipline guidelines.
  • Hires, trains, coaches, evaluates, and supervises staff; develops individualized skills development plans and provides guidance to staff in accomplishing  goals; ensures staff meet all mandatory training requirements.
  • Schedules staff and ensures appropriate staffing levels are maintained.
  • Oversees and/or conducts daily student check-in and maintains attendance records.
  • Creates, prepares, and distributes program advertisements and promotional materials.
  • Maintains records and prepares various reports and statistics related to site operations and activities including program registration, enrollment, tuition, projected revenue, and scholarships.
  • Communicates with parents, collaborates with local school districts on implementation of behavioral plans and other special services as needed.
  • Oversees planning and implementation of activities and events  year-round; approves Instructor II curriculum and plans.
  • Collects and tracks revenues.
  • Oversees planning and conducting of emergency drills; oversees and ensures safety and maintenance of facility. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill, and abilities.  A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skill and ability outlined  in thejob specis:  

  • Completion of 15 units in Early Childhood Education, Recreation Administration, or related coursework, AND  
  • At least three (3) years of teaching experience in a child care center or comparable group child care program.
  • An Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreation Administration, or related field may substitute for one year of experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreation Administration, or related field may substitute for two years of experience. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates must meet all qualifications in accordance with current legal and regulatory requirements for working with children in the age group in their program.
  • Must be willing to work the hours (work schedule) required for the assigned Center.
  • Prefer possession of a valid California Driver's license.

This position is a regular position of the City’s SEIU Local 1021 employee group and is eligible to receive benefits including but not limited to:

  • MEDICAL | City group health coverage, with the City paying a fixed dollar amount toward the cost of the monthly insurance premium: Employee only: $950.00 | Employee plus one: $1,900.00 | Family: $2,400.00
  • DENTAL | Premium fully paid for employee plus eligible dependents.
  • VISION | Premium fully paid for employee.
  • VACATION LEAVE | 10 days annually, increases after 3 years of service
  • SICK LEAVE | 12 days annually
  • HOLIDAYS | 12 paid City holidays plus 1 floating holiday per year

    • Tier 2 - hired on or after 7/1/2011: 2% @ 55, Average of 3 highest years
    • Tier 3 PEPRA - hired on or after 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62, Average of 3 highest years
  • GYM MEMBERSHIP REIMBURSEMENT | Up to $198 per year
  • BILINGUAL PAY (if eligible) | Up to $250 per month
