The Seasonal Tax Return Reviewer will ensure the accuracy, completeness, and overall quality of individual income tax returns (Form 1040). This role is ideal for someone who enjoys the technical side of tax work but also appreciates mentoring preparers and improving internal review processes in a small-firm environment.
Key Responsibilities
Review individual (1040) tax returns prepared by staff or seasonal preparers for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with current tax laws.
Identify errors, missing information, or potential tax savings opportunities.
Provide clear, supportive feedback to preparers to improve accuracy and consistency across returns.
Ensure all returns meet the firm’s quality control and documentation standards before delivery to clients.
Communicate with staff as needed to resolve questions or clarify tax data.
Keep current on relevant tax law changes impacting individual returns (e.g., credits, deductions, capital gains, etc.).
Support process improvement and contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Certification: CPA or EA required.
Experience:
Minimum of 8+ years of experience preparing and reviewing individual (1040) tax returns in a public accounting or small firm environment.
Strong understanding of itemized deductions, investment income, small business schedules, and multi-state returns.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency with tax software (e.g., CCH, Drake, or similar) and comfortable with paperless workflows.
Strong understanding of tax compliance best practices and review procedures.
Soft Skills:
Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to see the big picture.
Clear communicator with a collaborative, mentoring mindset.
Dependable, organized, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a close-knit team.
